A Dreamplay
by August Strindberg
August Strindberg wrote his Dreamplay in 1901 during the period of collapse of his third marriage with Harriet Bosse. It remains one of Strindberg's most admired and influential dramas, seen as the precursor to both dramatic Expressionism and Surrealism.
The main character, who was inspired by Bosse and played by her in the original 1907 production, Agnes is a daughter of gods who decides to descend to earth to experience human suffering. During her journey she meets various symbolic characters and goes through a variety of human experiences.
The play attempts to simulate a dream vision and explores the boundaries of reality. What is dream and what is reality? Do time and space exist? What is the meaning of love, obligations and repetitions?
Helsinki Attic Theatre presented a new adaptation of Strindberg’s surrealistic play. With recurring images of the door to happiness and unfulfilled dreams the play challenged the audience to examine their own notions concerning the meaning of human existence.
Performed by Helsinki Attic Theatre on:
May 23rd, 27th, 30th, 18.00 (6 p.m.), Caisa, Mikonkatu 17, Helsinki
